Smaller Video, Same Sharpness

Every compression throws some detail away; the trick is to throw away only what you can't see. Phones record at a very high bitrate (an iPhone 4K clip is often 50 Mbit/s), far more than a viewer can tell apart on a phone or laptop screen. On High, this tool keeps the resolution, keeps the frame rate, copies the sound untouched and re-encodes the picture at a bitrate that still looks sharp. In our test (20 Oct 2026) a 279 MB iPhone 4K video came out at 106 MB on High, 60 MB on Medium and 27 MB on Low. Videos that were already compressed shrink less: an 11.2 MB WhatsApp video came out at 6.7, 4.2 and 2.4 MB.

High, Medium or Low: What Changes

  • High: the sharpest result. With a size limit it uses the whole limit.
  • Medium: a smaller file that still looks good on a phone.
  • Low: the smallest file; fine for a quick share, soft on a big screen.

The picker shows the size each level will make for your video before you start, and the preview lets you check it before you download. A size limit always wins: the file is never bigger than the limit you choose.

What Keeps Quality, What Doesn't

  • Kept: resolution (1080p stays 1080p, 4K stays 4K), frame rate, rotation and the original sound.
  • Changed: the video is re-encoded as MP4 (H.264), the format every phone, computer and app plays. iPhone HDR becomes standard colours so it looks right everywhere.
  • When it can't be smaller: if your video is already well compressed, a new copy wouldn't be smaller, so the tool tells you and gives you the original back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you compress a video without losing any quality?

Not to the last pixel: a smaller file always holds less data. But phone videos are recorded at far more bitrate than the eye can see, so on High the tool keeps the resolution and makes a much smaller file that looks the same on a phone or laptop.

Which quality should I choose?

High for anything you will watch on a big screen or keep; Medium for sending to friends or family; Low when the smallest file matters most. The picker shows the size each one makes before you start.

Is the video uploaded?

No. It is compressed in your browser on your own device and never sent anywhere.
