When to choose PNG
PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so it's the right pick when you'll edit the photo, cut out a signature or add text on top. The photo is decoded straight to PNG, with no JPG step in between that would lose detail. The files are large: for uploading a photo to a form, HEIC to JPG is usually better.
Hidden photo details are left out
iPhone photos carry hidden details such as the camera model and often the GPS location. The PNG doesn't include them.
